Easter Sunday

Freedom Day

The 25th of April is celebrated as Freedom Day  (Dia da Liberdade) in Portugal, also known as the Carnation Revolution. This national holiday commemorates the peaceful military coup that took place on the 25th of April1974, which ended the Estado Novo dictatorship and restored democracy in Portugal. The revolution is called the Carnation Revolution because civilians placed carnations in the muzzles of soldiers' guns, symbolising the peaceful nature of the uprising.
