Christmas

25th of December is a day for family gatherings and enjoying leftovers from the previous night's feast. Some families also attend church services on Christmas Day. It is a national holiday in Portugal.

Boxing day does not exist in Portugal.

The afpop office will be closed between Christmas and New Year.

Restoration of Independence Day

Restoration of Independence Day in Portugal, also known as Dia da Restauração da Independência, is celebrated on the 1st of December. This national holiday commemorates the day when Portugal regained its independence from Spanish rule after 60 years of occupation in 1640.

The day is marked by various events and activities, including parades, concerts, and historical reenactments, to celebrate Portugal's rich history and cultural heritage.

All Saints' Day

All Saints' Day is an official public holiday (Dia de Todos os Santos) which falls on a Saturday this year. 

This day is a significant holiday that combines religious observance with rich cultural traditions. Families get together and visit the cemeteries to honour their deceased loved ones.

Many people attend special Masses held in churches to pray for the souls of the deceased and to celebrate the lives of saints.

 

Winter time

The clocks will go back one hour at 02h00 (2am) Sunday the 26th of October on Portugal mainland and Madeira (for the Açores this will be at 01h00). Enjoy the extra hour.

Corpo de Deus

The Corpo de Deus or Corpus Christi is celebrated on the 19th of June 2025. It is one of the public holidays in Portugal. You will be able to attend processions that travel through towns, carrying the ‘Body of Christ’, usually starting and ending at the church. 

The afpop Office will be closed on that day.
